About

Our Story

The Crow's Nest was founded after the Seventh Umbral Calamity by Eifawyb, otherwise known as "The Crow". Once a proud member of the Maelstrom, she was wounded a short time before the invasion began, and was forced into an early retirement. The brothers and sisters she once fought alongside were lost in the Battle of Cartenau, and communication between the different regions of the world slowed in the aftermath of the tragedy. This never sat quite right with her, and searching for a new purpose to carry her forward, she found it when traveling to other parts of Hydaelyn to seek answers and news that she could bring home to the people of Vylabrand who cared to listen.Eventually her word of mouth reports were penned down and distributed in monthly letters to those interested. This eventually became what is now known today as The Crow's Nest.

Issue One: New Beginnings

Heavensturn Brings Renewal

By: The Crow

As Heavensturn dawns, and with it brings a new year, the tribe now known as The Toksu celebrate more than just a festival, but a new beginning for their people as well. Candles were lit, food was offered, and a beautifully decorated shrine, honoring the spirit Kami, was crafted by the villagers as a symbol of the faith and rededication they carry into this next cycle."Back during our the founding of our village, there was great tension between ours and the neighboring tribes," a village elder began, sharing the tale of the Kami. "One night, they attacked. A brave warrior took the fight to the gates of our village to hold them back. They fought them off for as long as they could. In the end, they made the ultimate sacrifice that their people, our people, could escape unscathed. We believe that warrior was reincarnated, or perhaps even blessed by a fox spirt that night. It is to them, The Kami, we choose to honor and pray they continue to guide us ever along our path."

The weight of the story still lingers over the village as they continue to rebuild after recent destruction lost them their home and countless loved ones. In a tragedy reminiscent of that in the elder's tale, the Toksu people and their fishing village were attacked only a short time ago. They lost countless homes and loved ones, and if not for the kindness of strangers who chose to step in to offer aid, many of the villagers believe there would have been no survivors.A few called it luck, while others considered it fate. The chief claims it was the spirit of the Kami itself that brought those willing and able mercenaries to their side. "We thought ourselves lost," the chief said, "but the spirit led those strangers to us. We were saved by those willing to help others without promise of reward. We offered nothing, we could help little. And still, they helped."The process of rebuilding is not one that will happen over night, but resilient, humble, and faithful as they are, The Toksu believe they will once again find peace in a life of bountiful harvests and plentiful fish. They hope to reinstate trade with both those at sea and other villagers in-land.The chief had one final message to share with his people and us. "A lesson my own father taught me: Life is filled with difficulty, and it must be met with temperance. Fear of death is natural—but it should never become fear of living. To refuse a full life, when others have sacrificed so that it may be lived at all, is to dishonor the path that led us here."

Fight for Moogle Rights!

The PETM, People for the Ethical Treatment of Moogles, are planning a dramatic protest this month in Gridania that has garnered the attention and concern of local constables. The Twin Adders have given the organization leeway to protest, but have exacted promises of peaceful movements and the agreeance to obey local authorities.

Who is the White Coeurl?

By: Colette Evertide

Actions speak louder than words, and for none is that more true than The White Coeurl, the right paw of justice. Many a tails are told of this vigilante’s heroic efforts across the Shroud. She readily risks her nine lives to save people and bring balance to nature, only to disappear before proper gratitude can be expressed. Indeed, this cat sparks curiosity wherever she goes, yet one question claws at our minds the most.Who is the woman beneath the mask? While The Shroud would lay claim to this mysterious heroine, and it is true that most sightings have occurred in that region, her influence has most recently stretched as far as the city of Kugane and the villages in Yanxia. Most information about The White Coeurl remains speculation and comes from witnesses to her deeds and survivors she has saved, but she has become a common sight for some.“I can’t say much about her, but she’s quite the fisherman… Woman. Fishercat? She was reeling in catch after catch, I tell you! Never seen anything like it,” said one Kugane Fisherman, who claims to have seen her near the harbor only a few weeks ago.Her work within the region has been tied to an unnamed band of mercenaries, including an Ishgardian Knight moonlighting as a sellsword. When asked about the heroine, he dubbed her honorable and worthy of respect. "It is the path of the knight to defend the weak, innocent, and helpless. No matter her willfulness, I think the Coeurl does the same, in her own way."The White Coeurl chose not to answer any questions when approached directly, save one. Why conceal your identity if you stand by your actions? Relaying the message silently through a written note, she conveyed, "I wear the mask not for my own safety, but the safety of those who need my help."As it stands, we are no closer to finding out the truth about the woman behind the mask, and if that is for the best remains to be seen. For now, we shall stay as vigilant as the vigilante herself, and if any information comes to light, rest assured that it will be reported here first.

Hope is the New Currency of Ul'dah

By: Yayayusho Ruruyusho

In a city where fortunes rise and fall like the desert sun, few names have captured public admiration quite like that of Raloriku Sasariku, one of Ul’dah’s most enterprising merchants and a man many are calling “the People’s Partner.”This week, Raloriku unveiled a new initiative in the poorest districts of Ul’dah, including Pearl Lane, to provide food, water, and shelter to struggling families. The effort, entirely financed by his own private coffers, was conducted with assistance from the Brass Blades of Balsam, who distributed rations and ensured the safety of crowds for those who received them.In a rare public appearance, Raloriku addressed the assembled citizens from a simple platform overlooking the exchange. Dressed plainly, a notable departure from the gilded attire of the Ul’dahn upper class, he spoke with conviction and humility, his voice carrying across the plaza.“It was not long ago that I looked up from the dirt that I called home, asking for aid from the leaders of this city. No answer was given, no alms were handed out. I break with the old ways and return with the new—to you so that the poor and destitute of our fair city shall receive help when they need it most!”The crowd erupted in applause, with many saying that Raloriku was “a breath of fresh air.” Some even likened him to a new hope for the working class, citing his efforts to sponsor small businesses, aid orphanages, and fund reconstruction efforts in the wake of a drought last season.Raloriku is a well-known member of upper-class circles, specifically within the Syndicate, finding a way to bridge the gap between the Monetarist and Royalist factions, working hand in hand with several leaders to advance these new efforts in the city. While it is unclear what Raloriku intends to do next, it is certain that the people will gladly welcome the new hope that he brings to our city.

Where Friendship is Brewed

By: Colette Evertide

Gridania's up and coming tavern, The Pixie's Cauldron, is the perfect place to unwind for both travelers and locals alike. If the warm welcome and friendly greeting aren't enough to lure you in, the delicious drinks and foods on the menu certainly will! Perfectly curated to showcase the different regions the two owners, Amane Tsukinaga & Fallon Thatcher, have traveled together, the tavern offers a wide range of cuisines with everything from Ishgardian Beef Bourguignon to Doman Miso Soup. Their signature drink, The Great Magical Sphere, is a must-try for a very unique experience! The tavern opened its doors a few moons ago after the owners spent over a year planning it. It was Amane that first proposed the idea. "I just wanted a place to socialize and share my cooking." Fallon answered with enthusiasm, doing a lot of the heavy-lifting when it came to design. With input from Amane and their experienced barmaid, Breya, their collaborative vision came to life. In the beginning, the two intended to open a cafe upstairs that was fae themed, and a bar downstairs that showcased more of a witch theme. This inevitably led to the name for The Pixie's Cauldron when they decided to combine the two ideas.Indeed the establishment lives up to its namesake. When asked what made The Pixie's Cauldron so unique compared to other venues, both owners enthusiastically answered at almost the exact same time, "The chaos!"And it is only just getting started! With plans to open rooms available to adventurers to rent soon, and events already starting to fill their calendar, including the Valentione's event next moon, there is much to look forward to. "All we want is to see new faces and meet new people!"So, next time you're in the area, make sure to stop in and order your own 'GMS' and say hello! Who knows what chaos awaits you in the cauldron?

Learn more about the owners! How did the two of you meet?Fallon: "Oh, boy! Amane always hates that question. It's quite a funny story actually. Well, for me not for her really. Amane wasn't great with her aim back in the day. Needless to say, I caught a stray arrow of hers to the back of my shoulder."
Amane: "I had pretty shit aim back then. I was practicing, because clearly I needed it and missed the target."
Fallon: "She has a natual ability for healing though. After multiple apologies, she healed up the wound rather quickly. I then took her to the Conjurer's Guild in Gridania for her to learn more on honing her skills."
What is your favorite item on the menu?Amane: "The Frost Witch Velvet Cake and Petalshine Elixir!"Fallon: "Any Booze... Okay, fine. If I have to choose, Lanternlight Cider."
